About the Opportunity

With new investors in the local steel industry, the City of Whyalla is expected to grow significantly within the next few years. As such, The City of Whyalla now has an exciting senior leadership opportunity for a Director - City Growth to lead their Planning and Development Group based in Whyalla, SA and assist the community during this growth period. This is a full time position being offered on a 4 year fixed term basis.

Reporting to the CEO and responsible for a team of 6+ direct reports, this role will see you providing effective leadership, development and management of services that enhance the liveability and amenity of the City. You will lead and develop a multidisciplinary team in the integrated delivery of timely and efficient services through the following key functions:

  • Strategic and Statutory Land Use Planning/Building;
  • Environmental Health;
  • Economic Development; and
  • Regulatory Services.

To be considered for this position you will have tertiary qualifications in Land Use Planning and Development, Economic Development, Property Development or a related discipline and have demonstrated high-level leadership experience leading a multi-disciplinary team. Experience in managing statutory planning instruments and processes is also required and eligibility for membership to PIA and/or as a CPP, will be highly regarded, but is not mandatory.

As a highly strategic role, you must be able to demonstrate conceptual, analytical and critical thinking skills, having the ability to collaborate with and build strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Importantly, Council is looking for an innovative and engaging leader who will lead by example and inspire their people to achieve Council's strategic objectives, whilst still promoting and living by Council's core values.
